Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer described his emotions as “through the roof” after leading his team to victory against Sunderland in the League One play-off semi-final.

Goals from Patrick Bauer and Josh Cullen secured a 2-1 aggregate win for Charlton, booking their place in the play-off final at Wembley.

Bowyer praised the character and determination of his players, particularly striker Lyle Taylor, who scored the winning goal in the second leg.

“I’m so proud of the boys,” said Bowyer. “To come back from a goal down and win the tie is a testament to their spirit and belief.”

Charlton will now face either Portsmouth or Oxford United in the play-off final, with a place in the Championship up for grabs.

Midfielder Joe Aribo, who put in a standout performance in the semi-final, expressed his delight at reaching Wembley.

“It’s a dream come true to play at Wembley,” said Aribo. “We’ve worked so hard all season for this moment and we’re determined to make it count.”

Charlton captain Jason Pearce echoed Aribo’s sentiments, saying: “We’ve put in a lot of hard work this season and now we have the chance to achieve something special at Wembley.”

Bowyer, who has guided Charlton to their first play-off final in over 20 years, admitted that the occasion had left him “emotional.”

“I’ve been through a lot with this club and these players,” said Bowyer. “To lead them out at Wembley is something I’ll never forget. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.”
